Copper Core Quality Identification: Techniques for Detecting Luster and Impurities in Purple-Red Appearance

 

In the electrical engineering and wire and cable industries, the quality of copper cores is directly related to the conductivity and safety of products. High quality copper cores should have a purple red luster and low impurity content (our company's products all use high-quality copper cores, such as  UL10086 tin plated ETFE insulated wire and UL1516 ETFE Insulated Wire), Poor quality copper cores often have abnormal colors and more impurities. This article will provide a detailed introduction on how to identify the quality of copper cores through techniques such as purple red gloss and impurity detection.

 


The discriminatory significance of purple red luster

 

Purple red is a typical characteristic of high-quality pure copper, indicating high purity (above 99.5%) and good conductivity. This color is like the afterglow of a sunset shining on a metal surface, warm and even, reflecting the "natural beauty" of the copper core. by comparison:


High quality copper core: presenting a purple red color with a bright luster, soft and delicate texture, and smooth hand feel.


Poor quality copper core: The color is dark and gray, like a layer of haze; Some impurities have an unnatural greenish yellow hue, resembling jaundice; Or it may appear purple black, yellowish or whitish.


The purple red copper core has a smooth and glossy surface, with a soft and elastic texture, making it an ideal choice for motor copper wire. If the wire core is oxidized, loses its metallic luster, and turns black, it indicates that there are impurities, poor quality, or aging inside the copper core.

 

 

Impurity detection techniques

 

1. Appearance inspection method

 

The simplest method is to observe whether the surface of the copper core is smooth, free of defects, oxide layers, cracks, or other obvious defects. Specific operation:


Peel off a section of wire to expose the copper core;


Observe color and luster under natural light or sunlight;


High quality copper cores should have a uniform purple red color, while inferior copper cores may have color spots or uneven colors;


Gently rub the copper core with white paper. If there is black substance on the white paper, it indicates that there are many impurities in the copper core.


2. Physical performance testing

 

Hardness test: high quality copper core has good ductility, like the dough in the hands of Lamian Noodles masters, it will not break after repeated bending for more than ten times; Poor quality copper cores can break with a little force.


Weight testing: For wires of the same specifications, holding real copper feels heavy in the hand; A 2.5 square meter wire should have a copper core weight of around 2.2 kilograms per 100 meters. If it is less than half a pound, it may have been mixed with light metal.


Solubility test: Dissolve a small amount of copper wire in a specific solvent. Pure copper usually dissolves completely and the solution is homogeneous. If there are insoluble substances or turbidity, there may be insoluble impurities.

 

3. Burning technique


This move is very exciting! Cut the copper core and burn it with a lighter. If the real copper burns black, it will light up after wiping, just like it hasn't been burned before. Fake products reveal their true colors: aluminum wires turn white after being burned, and iron wires rust directly into a reddish brown color. However, a reminder is that this trick should be played in an open area and not in your own home.

 

 

The 'unwritten rules' known only by experts

 

Checking documents: The factory name, specifications, and 3C certification are printed on the regular copper wire insulation skin, with clear handwriting that can be used as an anti-counterfeiting label. Those words that resemble abstract paintings are most likely produced by black workshops.


Listen to the sound: When the copper core is bent, it makes a crisp and clear sound, like tearing transparent tape; The inferior copper core produces a muffled sound, as if stepping on snow.


Smell: Fresh copper cores have a unique metallic fragrance, while those with severe oxidation carry a rust smell. Once during the inspection, I smelled a chemical smell on the copper core - later on, upon inspection, it was found that the surface was coated with a layer of chemical coating!
