Breakthrough and Application Cases of Fluoroplastic Insulated Cable Materials

Characteristics and advantages of Teflon insulated cable materials

Teflon insulated cable materials occupy an important position in the cable industry due to their excellent performance, including:

High-temperature resistant wire: Teflon insulation sheath material has excellent heat resistance, and the long-term allowable working temperature can reach 200-260 ℃. For example, the long-term allowable working temperature for cable conductors insulated with perfluoroethylene propylene (FEP) is 200 ℃, while the long-term allowable working temperature for cable conductors insulated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can reach 260 ℃.

Corrosion resistance: Teflon has excellent chemical corrosion resistance, which can resist the erosion of oil, water, acid, alkali, various chemical reagents (except chloroform) and corrosive gases.

Flame retardant performance: Fluoroplastics have high oxygen index and low smoke characteristics, and have strong flame retardancy, which can effectively prevent the spread of fire. Compared with PE and PVC, fluoroplastics have a higher ultimate oxygen index, a smaller flame diffusion range during combustion, and less smoke generation.

Technological Breakthroughs and Innovations

‌Material Innovation‌: Zhejiang IRONFLON has established four major Teflon insulated cable(High-temperature resistant wire) series-PTFE, FEP, ETFE, and PFA-covering all application scenarios from low to high voltage and from conventional to extreme environments. Among these, PTFE insulated cables withstand temperatures up to 260°C, making them suitable for nuclear power equipment and high-temperature dryers; FEP-insulated cables combine flexibility with weather resistance, making them suitable for automotive engine bay wiring.

‌Process Enhancements‌: Companies have invested in upgraded equipment, controlling PTFE cable insulation layer thickness tolerances to ±3μm-significantly exceeding industry averages. Independently developed PTFE cable manufacturing processes have also supported the University of New South Wales in Australia to create lightweight electrical solutions.

‌Patented Technologies‌: Jiangsu Yuantong Cable Co., Ltd. secured a patent for 'A Copper-Core Fluoroplastic-Insulated Steel-Band Armoured High-Temperature Resistant Power Cable'. Both the insulation layer and outer sheath utilise fluoroplastic materials, offering high-temperature resistance, voltage endurance, acid-alkali resistance, corrosion protection, and anti-ageing properties. The cable exhibits excellent tensile strength and flame retardancy. Its cooling channels support either air or water cooling to dissipate heat generated during operation.

Type Application Case

Teflon insulated cable(High-temperature resistant wire) materials have been successfully applied in multiple fields:

High frequency data transmission: Teflon have low dielectric constant and low loss factor, and their dielectric properties are rarely affected by humidity, making them particularly suitable for data transmission cables that require low attenuation. In some situations where high temperature resistance and fire prevention are required, fluoroplastics are used as insulation media for RF cables, which is beneficial for improving the quality of transmitted signals.

Automotive industry: Teflon insulated cable(High-temperature resistant wire) are used as connecting wires in harsh environments, with a maximum operating temperature of 250 ℃, and can pass the UL standard 80 ℃ oil resistance test. Many key parts of cars use fluoroplastic insulated wires, such as cables for automatic transmission devices for corrosive oil, gasoline level sensors, brake friction sensors, etc.

Construction industry: With the increasing number of high-rise buildings, the requirements for cable fire prevention have been raised, and the high thermal stability, high flame retardancy, and low loss of fluoroplastics have become a hot topic of concern. Some European countries mandate the use of fluoroplastic network cables for wiring.

Industrial field: Changfeng FF46P Teflon insulated and sheathed copper braided shielded power cable is suitable for transmission and distribution lines with AC rated voltage of 0.6/1kV and below. It has high temperature resistance, oil resistance, corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, corrosive gas resistance, waterproofing and other characteristics, and is widely used in metallurgy, power, petrochemical and other industries.
