What is the corrosion resistance of UL20710 multi core copper wire?

After working in the wire and cable industry for so many years, I am often asked by customers: What is the corrosion resistance of UL20710 multi core copper wire? Can it withstand extreme environments such as humidity, acidity, alkalinity, salt spray, and oil pollution? Today, we will talk about the corrosion resistance of this cable from the perspectives of materials, structure, testing, and application.

Dual material protection, eliminating corrosion hazards from the root

The corrosion resistance of UL20710 multi-core copper wire is not achieved by a single material, but by the dual protection of the conductor and insulation layer, just like putting two layers of "protective clothing" on the cable, with each material selection focused on "corrosion resistance".
Let's talk about the conductor first. It's the "heart" of the cable. If the conductor corrodes, the entire cable will be completely useless. We at Zhejiang IRONFLON never engage in the "bare copper counting" process. All UL20710 products use high-purity oxygen free copper substrates, with impurity content strictly controlled within 0.05%. This can reduce local corrosion caused by impurities from the source, which I have seen many small manufacturers unable to achieve.

On this basis, we will also customize two types of conductors, tin plated copper and silver plated copper, according to the actual usage scenarios of customers, to solve different corrosion problems in a targeted manner. Compared with ordinary bare copper conductors, our tinned copper conductors have a uniform and standard thickness of the tin plating layer on the surface, which can directly isolate copper from moisture, sulfides, and chloride ions in the air, and there will be no further oxidation, blackening, or powder loss of the conductor.

As for silver plated copper conductors, they are the "top of the line" in anti-corrosion. They not only completely block the invasion of corrosive media, but also slightly improve conductivity, making them particularly suitable for extreme scenarios such as high salt spray and strong chemical corrosion along the coast.

Looking at the insulation layer again, it is the first line of defense and the most critical step in preventing cable corrosion. We have directly abandoned the commonly used PVC and rubber materials for ordinary cables, and all UL20710 come standard with FEP insulation. Maybe many people don't know about this material. Let me tell you the truth. We measured it in our IRONFLON workshop. After soaking UL20710 cable in 50% sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide solution for 72 hours, it was taken out and dried. The insulation layer has no signs of swelling and cracking, and its performance is the same as the new one.

Even if it is exposed to organic solvents such as industrial oil pollution, gasoline, and acetone for a long time, it will not dissolve or corrode. Whether it is mechanical processing or petrochemicals, this oil intensive scene can be easily adapted. On the other hand, for ordinary PVC cables, as long as they are slightly exposed to acid or alkali, the insulation layer will crack within a month; Rubber cables are less resistant to moisture, and they will age and pulverize in a humid environment within a year. This is the gap, and why more and more customers are willing to spend a little more cost to choose UL20710.

Precise structural design, details are revealed in every detail

Many customers have given me feedback on a problem: after using ordinary multi-core wires for a long time, there will be "inter core corrosion", where one core is corroded and the entire cable has to be scrapped. In fact, this is not due to poor cable quality, but mainly because ordinary multi-core wires have not been well protected structurally, leaving gaps for corrosive media to penetrate. Over time, problems naturally arise.

UL20710 multi-core copper wire completely solves this pain point from the perspective of structural design. It adopts a structure of "single core independent insulation+multi-core tight twisting", and each wire core is wrapped with a dedicated FEP insulation layer, just like putting a "small jacket" on each wire core. Even if a single core is accidentally damaged, it will not affect other cores, completely preventing the diffusion of corrosive media along the gaps between cores and avoiding the chain problem of "one corrosion, all corrosion".

More importantly, attention to detail is crucial. We use a high-precision extrusion production line with fully automated control throughout the entire process. The thickness of the insulation layer is uniform without deviation, and the error can be controlled within ± 0.02mm. There are no bubbles, pinholes, or core deviation. Some people may think that this detail is irrelevant, but I have been in the industry for so long and have seen too many cables with tiny defects in the insulation layer being drilled into holes by corrosive media, ultimately leading to equipment failures. So every UL20710 we have undergoes manual inspection in the workshop to ensure closed-loop protection of the insulation layer, leaving no room for corrosion.

If it is a more extreme usage scenario, such as both corrosion and electromagnetic interference, we can also customize a dual protection structure of "tin plated copper braided shielding+FEP outer sheath". The shielding layer can resist electromagnetic interference, ensure signal stability, and also provide secondary barrier against corrosive media; The outer sheath further strengthens protection, even in a composite environment of "acid alkali+salt spray+oil pollution+vibration", it can operate stably.

Rigorous testing verification

Having performance advantages alone is not enough. The corrosion resistance of UL20710 has passed multiple international standard tests, proving its strength with data. Each batch of products undergoes strict sampling before leaving the factory:

  • Salt spray corrosion test: According to commonly used industrial standards, set the test temperature to 35 ℃, prepare a 5% NaCl salt spray solution, and test continuously for 500 hours. After the test is completed, all 10 samples are qualified, with no cracks or bubbles in the insulation layer, no oxidation or blackening of the conductor, and an insulation resistance retention rate of ≥ 95%; Compared to ordinary PVC cables, after only 72 hours of testing, there were cracks in the insulation layer and oxidation of the conductor, and the difference was clear at a glance.
  • Acid alkali immersion test: Immerse the sample in 10% sulfuric acid and 10% sodium hydroxide solution at room temperature of 25 ℃ for 30 consecutive days. After removal, the cable quality change rate is ≤ 2%, the volume resistivity retention rate is ≥ 90%, and the insulation layer is still intact without any swelling or degradation phenomenon; However, ordinary rubber cables experience surface powdering and insulation failure after soaking for 7 days.
  • Damp heat aging test: Set the test temperature to 40 ℃ and the relative humidity to 95%. Leave it for 1000 hours continuously. After the test is completed, the tensile strength retention rate of the insulation layer is ≥ 85%, without aging or cracking, and it can still meet the long-term operation requirements of industrial equipment.

These tests far exceed conventional industrial cable standards, ensuring that UL20710 can operate stably for a long time even in the face of the harshest corrosive environments in practical use.

Application scenario

With excellent corrosion resistance, UL20710 has become the preferred choice for wiring in harsh environments, covering multiple high demand areas:

  • Petrochemical industry: The internal wiring and instrument signal lines of equipment in chemical plants and refineries are exposed to acidic and alkaline gases, oil stains, and steam for a long time. Using UL20710 can avoid insulation corrosion, signal distortion, and reduce equipment downtime for maintenance;
  • Coastal and marine engineering: ship cabin wiring, offshore platform sensor cables, port machinery connection cables, resistant to corrosion from high salt spray, seawater splashes, and humid sea winds, with a service life 3-5 times longer than ordinary cables;
  • Metallurgy and High Temperature Scenarios: Wiring of high-temperature equipment in steel plants and smelters, while withstanding high temperatures (long-term operation at 200 ℃), dust, acid and alkali fumes, insulation layer does not age, and conductors do not corrode;
  • Medical and precision instruments: The internal connection wires of medical equipment and testing instruments are resistant to corrosion and moisture caused by disinfectant reagents, while ensuring stable signal transmission and meeting the high cleanliness and stability requirements of medical scenarios;
  • Industrial Automation: Automated production lines, PLC control cabinets, servo motor connection lines, resistant to oil, acid, alkali, and vibration, suitable for long-term continuous operation in complex industrial environments.

The corrosion resistance of cables directly determines the stability and service life of equipment. Choosing the right cable in a corrosive environment is a "safety" measure for production safety and cost control. UL20710 multi core copper wire, with high-quality tin/silver plated copper conductors, FEP insulation, precision structural design, and rigorous testing and verification, has created comprehensive corrosion resistance and protection. It can easily cope with various extreme environments such as humidity, acidity, alkalinity, salt spray, and oil pollution, making it an ideal wiring choice for industrial, marine, chemical, metallurgical, and other scenarios.
